Warning Signs of Drug Abuse

Drug abuse warning signs affect are different for everyone. However, there are some common warning signs that you should be aware of in case you or someone you love has a problem and needs help.

Physical warning signs - these are some of the signs you may see but remember that this is not all inclusive and if you suspect drug abuse you need to seek help.
  • Cycles of increased energy, restless behavior and changes in sleep cycles
  • Slowed reaction time, speech or other behaviors
  • Marked weight changes
  • Excessive sleep in cycles
  • Changes in clothing (perhaps to hide needle marks)
  • Any sign of drug paraphernalia
  • Chronic sinus problems or nose bleeds
  • Constant signs of bronchitis or breathing troubles
  • Ongoing dental problems
Mental/Emotional warning signs -
  • Over abundance of energy, more talkative than normal
  • Irritability, anxiety, increase in anger or uncontrollable anger
  • Lethargic behavior, overly calm or unfazed by what is going on around them
  • Depression or depressed behavior
  • Delusions or paranoia
  • Hallucinations
Other signs -
  • Theft
  • Loss of concern for personal hygiene
  • Lack of concern about a job or increased job instability
  • Distancing oneself from family and friends/increased isolation
  • Doctor hopping/ excessive refills of prescription drugs
